Sam Burbank
English Language Arts - Creative Writing - Spanish
Sam is a writer and teacher in Portland, OR. He holds a Bachelor's in English and Spanish Language and Literature from the University of St. Andrews, Scotland, and a Master's in Secondary Education with a focus on English Language Arts and Spanish from Portland State University. He is IB certified in English, and has taught for Portland Public Schools for 6 years. He is also a graduate of the Poet's Studio in Portland. He was runner up for the Dan Hemingway Short Story Prize, 2016, and his work has appeared in Frogpond, The Oregon Capital Chronicle, and Gear Junkie.
Sam has taught courses in English Language Arts, and IB Language and Literature, and Spanish Immersion. He loves crafting curriculum that allows students to learn through creative practice. He believes that pretty much anything, including science, is a creative practice, and that the doing of something with what you're learning is really what matters. He has extensive experience working with students from a range of backgrounds and needs. Whether your student is trying to prepare for the demanding IB exams, publish a poem, or experience less frustration in their language class, Sam will be delighted to help.
